Today we have been learning about UK countries and city’s .There are four countries in the UK.

They are England,Northern Ireland,Scotland and Wales.

Geography – Sefton park

In geography we are learning about Sefton Park. Today we made our own timeline to show when Sefton Park was made. The children put down the dates when the teachers were born and compared them to when Sefton Park was made.

Sefton Park Geography Trip

Year 1 had a great time on their Geography trip to Sefton Park. They explored Old Nick’s Cave, the Palm House and the Fairy Glen. They used compasses and maps to navigate around the park.

Our World

In geography class 2 have been enjoying learning all about our world. We have been using atlas’s to help find the world’s seven continents as well as learning all about the five oceans. We have been using information books to compare the similarities and differences between countries and what human and physical features these countries have.

Art: Observational pictures

Reception class enjoyed a lovely outdoor learning session in the school garden. Armed with clipboards and pencils, the children observed the plants, flowers, and insects around them and created wonderful drawings based on what they saw. It was a great opportunity to explore nature and practise their observational skills in a fun, hands-on way.

In geography we are looking at the capital cities. We had a map and labelled where the capital cities are.

The children enjoyed a trip to Kirkby and Hightown today to follow the course of the River Alt. They investigated the flow of the river and observed changes in the landscape as the River Alt made its way into the Irish Sea.

In geography we have been learning about capital cities. The children researched each capital city and found information about them.

Researching Hilbre Island

Hilbre Island, a local nature reserve on the Wirral, is our current geography topic and as part of our learning we have been analysing maps and photographs to get a better understanding of the geographic features of the island.

Trip to Thurstaston, Parkgate and exploring the River Dee.

Today we went on a trip to The Wirral to explore Thurstaston, Parkgate and the River Dee. We enjoyed a lovely hike through the forest to explore the caves that were used to store stolen goods from passing ships in Thurstaston. Then we drove up to Parkgate to see where the river silted over and became Marshlands. We then enjoyed a lovely ice cream with the view.

West Kirby Walk

Last week, as part of our geography topic, Class 4 took a trip to West Kirby and though we were not able to go across to Hilbre Island this time we did get the chance to observe it during our exploration of West Kirby marina and our walk through the dunes! Mr Verdan lead a discussion on the physical and human features we could see as we pointed out Hilbre Island, Middle Eye and Little Eye.

Shape Hunt!

Our nursery children set off on an exciting shape hunt around the school! We navigated our way through our school using directions. Armed with sharp eyes and plenty of curiosity, they spotted circles, squares, triangles, and more hidden in everyday places from windows and doors to playground markings. The children loved naming each shape and talking about where they appear in our world.

Exploring autumn in the natural world.

This week, our Nursery children have been exploring the natural world and discovering the changes in autumn. Out in the garden, they have been busy collecting leaves, exploring pine cones and conkers using their senses to look closely, touch, and talk about what they notice.

Through play and exploration, they’re developing curiosity, observation skills, and a real sense of wonder about the changing seasons.

The class started their North America topic this afternoon by finding settlements on a map of the U.S.A.

Together, the class explored the factors that lead to areas with high and low population density.

Learning about Ecosystems in Geography

In this lesson, children learn that South America has many different ecosystems, which are places where plants and animals live together. They explore the Amazon Rainforest, home to tall trees, colourful birds, and thousands of other species. They also look at the Andes Mountains, where it is much colder and animals like llamas live, and the grasslands (called the Pampas), where lots of farming takes place.

Pupils discover that each ecosystem has its own climate, plants, and animals, and that people need to help protect these environments so they can stay healthy for the future.

Class 3 have been learning about the four tallest peaks in the UK. Using maps and atlases, they located and labelled the highest mountains in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The children coloured each country differently, then marked the position of each peak on their maps. This helped them understand UK geography, develop map-reading skills, and learn how physical features like mountains are shown on maps.

As part of their North America topic, the class visited Birkenhead Park, which served as an inspiration for Central Park. Pupils used compasses and maps to locate various landmarks around the park.

Chester

We visited Chester to see why it’s a tourist destination and to assess the human and physical features of the area.

Volcanoes & Earthquakes

🌍✨ Year 3 have been learning about how earthquakes happen!
We explained that the Earth’s tectonic plates can get stuck, build up pressure, and then suddenly snap, making the ground shake.💥One of our children had a fantastic explanation.👏

Human and physical features.

Today using a Venn diagram we looked at what similarities Formy and Brisbane have and what differences there are.We looked at what maybe a physical and human feature.

Maps in Reception

The children have been looking at and thinking about maps, we talked about what maps are used for and discussed maps that they have seen at home such as maps of the zoo, maps for our city, treasure maps and weather maps. Then the children chose to make their own maps in the creative area using grids, rulers, pens and pencils.

Robotic mice in Reception

The children used the programmable mice to navigate around the map this week.The children worked together using positional language to discuss the best route around the map helping the mouse find their way home.

Winter topic❄️

Nursery have been learning all about the changing seasons, exploring our world around us. The children have been painting some wonderful winter themed pictures and using the loose parts to create some fabulous snowflakes.

We then discussed different clothes that we would wear in different seasons and how we need to wrap up warm in the winter. The children then completed a cut and stick activity to match the items to season.

Facts about Belfast.

In geography we are learning about capital cities. Today we used the iPads and books to find out facts about Belfast. The children wanted to know what landmarks are in Belfast, is there a river in Belfast and what is it called?

Maps

The children have been looking at different maps and their features in Reception. Following our trip to see the beautiful Chinese arch we chose to draw maps showing the route we took from school to the Chinese arch. The children worked independently describing the route as they drew buildings and shops then labelled areas on their map.

We’ve been looking at the landscape around Mold and discussing what the colours on a map tell us about hills and valleys in the United Kingdom.

A brilliant geography lesson today as we explored the 8 points of a compass 🧭 and developed our map-reading skills 🗺️
Our headteacher joined us to demonstrate how to use a compass correctly, and we had the chance to practise using real maps.

Our world – where we live

The children explored our world this week, we discussed what country we live in and what city. We then had a look at some familiar landmarks around our city, the children loved explaining if they have ever been to these landmarks, then we had a look at the radio city tower which we can see from our Nursery garden. The children were so excited to see something familiar and we had a look at it from our garden. The children then decorated some lovely worlds.

Geography Trip

Class 3 had a fantastic trip to Loggerheads and Mold today! 🌿⛰️

We explored the landscape, used our compass skills to spot Moel Famau, and enjoyed climbing the hill to take in the amazing views. A brilliant day of learning and adventure! 👏✨

Using a compass

This week in geography we have been learning how to use a compass getting ready for our trip to Sefton Park. The children had to find North, East, South and West.

Maps in Reception

Following our class trip to see a farm we looked at a map of Farmer Teds and talked about our visit, thinking about the different animals and buildings on the farm. Then the children drew their own maps of the farm together, talking through their ideas with the adult.

Nursery Farm Trip 🐑🐖

Nursery had a wonderful time visiting the farm, where the children were excited to see a variety of animals and their babies. They enjoyed observing the animals up close, learning their names, and talking about how to care for them. It was a lovely hands-on experience that sparked curiosity and supported their understanding of the natural world.

Geography: Ways we travel to school🚌🚶

This afternoon the children discussed what ways they travel to school, some children said that they walk or catch the bus. Then in a directed activity the children then drew beautiful pictures of how they travel to school independently.

Calderstones Park: Signs of Spring🌸

This week Nursery visited Calderstones Park as we explored signs of spring, we looked for lovely new flowers that have bloomed, trees that have started to grow their leaves and we saw lots of minibeast. We also heard lots of beautiful singing from the birds in the trees. Then we had a lovely rest in the sunshine to have a yummy cake and a quick play on the playground before heading back to school. What a lovely afternoon.

Geography – Rivers

Class 5 enjoyed a visit to see the River Alt today, observing its journey in Kirkby then to its mouth in Hightown. The children impressed Mr. Verdin with their knowledge before ending the day having fun on the beach!

Class 1 end of year trip

Class 1 visited Formby Beach for our end of year trip, we did some amazing art work like Richard Long and then looked at the coast.

Digimaps and Hilbre Island

Today we used Digimaps to have a look at the coordinates of Hilbre Island before we go to our trip. We learnt what coordinates are and how to find them.

Thurstaston and Parkgate

Class 6 enjoyed a trip out this week as part of our geography topic. We’ve been learning the history behind the once thriving port of Parkgate and its demise in the 1900s. In class before our trip, we mapped out our route for Thurstaston using our co-ordinates and compass skills and visited the cave where ill-gotten contraband (looted from passing ships in the River Dee) was stored before being sold at The Red Lion public house in Parkgate back in the 18th century. We seen how the River Dee has silted up over time and how Parkgate has become a maritime conservation area. The Red Lion pub is still there today and Parkgate is a lovely place to visit.

Planning our route to Hilbre Island

Today we made a plan for the route that we are going to take to Hilbre Island. This was exciting for us to find out what time we would need to leave in order to make sure we get there for low tide.
